A chair, a music stand, a score. Antonia Baehr sits at the very centre of the stage, wearing a black suit. For this lecture-performance Baehr requested that friends and relatives give her scores of their own laughter as a birthday present, which she then used as the starting point for her new work: She laughs. At first quietly and shyly, later loudly and passionately. Her facial expression changes from being rigid and serious, to being elated with large eyes and a wide-open mouth. She is not intent on being comical. She examines laughter as an independent form of expression, not connected to, or emanating from, any particular punchlines, circumstances or other causes. She is concerned, rather, with the very phenomenon itself – with sound, form, music, choreography, rhythm and gesture.
Antonia Baehr‘s work is interdisciplinary. What characterizes her is a non-disciplinary work and a method of collaboration with different people, using a game-structure with switching roles: each person is alternately director / author and performer for the other one. From 2006 until 2008 she was associated artist in residence at Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers in France. In 2008 she published her book Rire / Laugh / Lachen. November 2010 sees the development of a new choreography for four interpreters. She is the producer of the horse whisperer and dancer Werner Hirsch, the musician and choreographer Henri Fleur. Her productions include: Holdings hands 2000, Un aprèsmidi 2003, Larry Peacock 2005, Danke 2006, Nom d’une Pipe 2007, Lachen 2008 und Over the Shoulder 2009.
