As you make your bed, so you must lie on it. In the HOTEL HASSLER three accurately dressed men examine a wide spectrum of falling movements and body contractions. Two dancers fall, one on top of the other, are sculpturally redefined, and then start spinning in a circle. Gradually they are overcome by gravity, and find themselves being dragged away, only to be replaced by a third dancer, who „declines“ his various „states of matter“, the description WILHELM GROENER uses for this process. From time to time references to fight scenes from films, torture, sportsmen‘s jubilation, male tests of strength as well as marionette- and robot-like movements make a sudden appearance. And then, before you have even taken a second look, these references have been exaggerated in a completely grotesque fashion. The atmospherically monotone background noises emphasise the formal artificiality of the whole scenario. This is a hotel for bizarre guests, who quickly lose their way and their composure. It is a completely idiosyncratic world (of movement), but one which we do all recognise. A world which not only knocks down human bodies or twists them into shape, but also disarranges our perception.
The visual artist Mariola Groener and the dancer and choreographer Günther Wilhelm have been collaborating on projects since 2000 as WILHELM GROENER. Since then a dozen pieces have been created, in which the duo combines dance, installation and visual media. Aesthetically unembellished and accurate movements are continually slipping into the absurd, are ironically converted, or echoed using medial technology. In addition to their other productions, the duo has, since 2001, been working successively on the performance project 33 Skizzen (33 Sketches).
