Performers direct the audience into a corner of the stage. They have to bend down low and look into into a small peep hole. One hears screaming, laughing, rejoicing people, whining guitars, a man talking to and enciting his audience – one can literally taste the air behind the door, which, as a projection, opens to bombard the audience with a cacophonic Italian tvshow. Again and again obvious illusions are created by means of projection. The spectator, sitting in his seat, is excluded; he becomes an outsider. With a great sense of humour, Ludica. (Nardi / Tanaka) reflect on the theme of „standing in the corner“ and deliberately plays with its spectators, only to then outplay them. Using a reduced and abstract style, this Installation- Performance examines the relationship between distance and proximity, emptiness and abundance, as well as the audience‘s participation and observations within the context of this media maelstrom. THE CORNER plays with the expectations of the audience – they are manipulated, mislead, confronted with their own feelings and forced to reflect on how they are influenced by the media-created visual noise.
The choreographer, Morgan Nardi, and the visual artist, Naoko Tanaka, form the core of the artists‘ collective, Ludica. (Nardi / Tanaka), which was founded in Düsseldorf in 2001. In their work, which has been presented internationally, the duo is concerned with the fusion of the two art forms. Morgan Nardi studied classical ballet and contemporary dance in Florence, Milan and Cannes, and after completion, danced with NEUER TANZ in Düsseldorf. Naoko Tanaka studied painting and sculpture at the State University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo and came to Düsseldorf with a scholarship to the Kunstakademie.
