„There are no good guns, there are no bad guns. A gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a good man is no threat to anyone, except bad people. The problem is what you are going to see is ein Opfer - a sacrifice. Dance is a business. Business is an Art. Art is a problem. Business is a Dance. Political correctness is tyranny with a happy face. We are not boring because we are fashionable. We know that it is not good for your morals to see bad dancing or to see bad art. Do it the hard way and it‘s easy sailing. Dress me slow because I‘m in a hurry. Flow my tears with NEUER TANZ“

Men in suits enter onto the stage with empty expressions. A voice bathes the audience in the emotive tones of a song by John Dowland – even if these notes do not come directly out of the „singer‘s“ mouth, but are emitted from the loudspeakers. It is the revolver which controls events, fingers on the trigger. It is as if man has lost control over the weapon, and it is forcing him to his knees. Artifice is presented as being cooly chic, in the presence of appearance and reality. In this ballet performance VA Wölfl and his ensemble drive home the point, literally and metaphorically, taking the mannerisms of film killers to the extreme. VA Wölf‘s work is continually exploring new ways of identifying patterns of perception, without directly reflecting reality.

The Düsseldorf Ensemble NEUER TANZ has existed for more than 20 years under VA Wölfl, who studied painting with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg and photography under Otto Steinert at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. VA Wölfl is a nationally and internationally renowned figurehead in the contemporary dance scene, winner of the World- Wide-Video-Award (The Hague, 1982), the First German Producers‘ Prize for Choreography (1995), and of the Critics‘ Prize 2006.
