FESTSAAL IM KÜNSTLERHAUS

Logobi is a streetdance form the Ivory Coast. Using speech and gesture the performer attempts to impress his audience. „It‘s a dance for gangsters“. The two dancers, on the one hand, a European dancer and, on the other, a dancer from the Ivory Coast, meet on an empty stage to enter into a dialogue in front of the audience. While the Ivorian dancer describes African dance tradition and streetdances like Logobi and Coupé Decalé, the German dancer translates and demonstrates concepts of contemporary European dance - the series of lecture-performances compares and contrasts, presenting the varying styles of movement and examining their relevance and contents in diverse contexts. Via these dialogues and demonstrations the perception of African dance collides with the concepts of European dance. The audience is left to interprete whether it‘s just about dance, or whether more is at stake.

The theatre director Monika Gintersdorfer and the visual artist Knut Klaßen have been collaborating for the last four years on projects which can be classified in the context of performative forms of film, theater and dance. Using a combination of movement and text, Gintersdorfer / Klaßen juxtapose contemporary and traditional culture in Africa and Europe, and thus create a bridge for different dance cultures to encounter one another. Together with their German-Ivory Coast team, they have realised the five-part dance series LOGOBI, of which four parts are shown here, and with support from the Goethe Institute they presented the festival Abidjan Mouvement on the Ivory Coast.
