The German Dance Platform has come to an end and Germany's independent dance scene is one step nearer to answering the question, how and whether contemporary dance can be defined.
Under the motto "One step ahead" the 9th German Dance Platform was hosted and organised by the Tafelhalle in the KunstKulturQuartier in Nuremberg from 25 - 28 February 2010, having been commissioned by the team of co-producers.
500 professional visitors from over 50 countries were accredited for Nuremberg; on offer - 11 productions, 29 performances. Around 5000 tickets for the performances were sold, thus achieving a capacity of 86% in the six venues - Tafelhalle, Festsaal im Künstlerhaus, Neues Museum, Kongresshalle, Theatre Pfütze and Theatre Mummpitz.
The selection of productions had been made in advance from around 200 works with the lable "made in Germany" by a jury of four - the freelance journalist, Melanie Suchy, the choreographer, dancer and curator of dance for Kampnagel Hamburg, Jochen Roller as well as Michael Bader and Gerti Köhn (Tafelhalle im KunstKulturQuartier).
However, the performances were not the only focus of the Dance Platform. The organisers were concerned that a forum for exchange should take place, on the productions themselves and on tendancies in contemporary dance. A comprehensive and diverse programme of supplementary events encouraged this. For example there were audience discussions with the invited choreographers, the Goethe Institute organised professional discussions and presentations were made by Tanzplan Deutschland, the National Performance Network, ID_Frankfurt and the European Dancehouse Network. The programme book, which was produced in co-operation with the International Theatre Institute, provides an overall perspective on the independent German dance scene, with portraits on 50 choreographers.
During the Finale presentation, Michael Bader announced his successor: the choice of the co-presenter team has fallen on the European Centre for Arts Dresden/Hellerau under the artistic direction of Dieter Jaenicke. The 10th German Dance Platform will take place from 23 - 26 February 2012.
The Tafelhalle im KunstKulturQuartier, Nuremberg now becomes a member of the co-presenter team, together with euro-scene Leipzig, Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, JOINT ADVENTURES Munich, Kampnagel Hamburg, the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt a.M., the tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf, TANZtheater INTERNATIONAL hannover, the TheaterWerkstatt Berlin and the Theaterhaus Stuttgart.
The German Dance Platform 2010 was supported by the Federal Ministery for Culture and Media and the Tanzplan Germany and financially supported by the State Cultural Foundation, the Zukunftsstiftung of the Sparkasse, the Bavarian Cultural Foundation, the City of Nuremberg , as well as regional sponsors VAG and Mercedes-Benz. The patron of the German Dance Platform 2010 was Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and the Arts.
